In order to meet the national strategic need in key areas of Aeronautics and Space, Civiling Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, etc, and to closely conform the national strategic goal of building an innovative country, the school is basing its research on both univerisity’s traditional superior discipline of mechanics and the emerging discipline of aerospace. A high-level research team with distinctive characteristics is thus built from a galaxy of faculty members, who are actively conduct researches in aircraft composites and structural manufacture, aircraft structural design and overall design, solid mechanics, engineering mechanics, general mechanics, computational mechanics, fluid mechanics, experimental mechanics and other cross-displinery research areas.

During recent years, the school has been funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Department of Science and Technology and other national sources to undertack national 973 programs, national 863 programs, major programs, major international cooperation programs and other state-level scientific research programs. The school has also been granted with a number of national- and provincial-level technological awards. The research in composite mechanics and structure, nonlinear dynamics, coupled problems has gained international recognition. In the last three years, the scientific research funding has witnessed continous growth, and more than 400 high-level SCI articles have been published.

The school has established sustainable scientific cooperations with large domestic enterprises such as COMAC, AECC, Shanghai Academy of Aerospace Technology, SAIC, China Shipbuilding Industry Group, as well as well-renowned international enterprises such as Boeing Company and Airbus. The research include exploration of cutting-edge technologies, tackling of key technological changllenges and application of engineering technologies.
